“TOBACCO CESSATION – AN UPDATE”

A CDE programme was organised by the Department of Public Health Dentistry, Sardar Patel Postgraduate Institute of Medical and Dental Sciences, Lucknow, supported by the IAPHD UP chapter on the topic, “ Tobacco Cessation- an Update” on 27th August 2016 at Sardar Patel Postgraduate Institute of Medical and Dental Sciences, Lucknow .

The CDE programme was an unprecedented event which brought together 311 professionals from across Uttar Pradesh. Dr. Bidyut Kanti Sarkar was the keynote speaker who is currently a senior research scientist at Public Health Foundation of India and was previously the National Research team leader at WHO country office for more than 11 years in areas of disease surveillance and research. He is on the review panel for international journals Plos One, Nicotine and Tobacco Research, BMC Public health, WHO SEAR journal of Public Health and National Medical Journal of India (NMJI).

Tobacco continues to be the leading cause of preventable death. Thus tone of the CDE programme was set by the welcome speech by Dr. Praveen Mehrotra, Principal & Convenor, Sardar Patel Postgraduate Institute of Medical and Dental Sciences, Lucknow and Dr. Sabyasachi Saha,  Secretary DCI who addressed the gathering on the need for policies to curb the growing menace of tobacco and emphasised the importance of quality research and evidence-based practice. This was followed by first session by the speaker who focussed on the various health effects of tobacco, mechanism of nicotine dependence, global treaty and strategy for tobacco control, WHO MPOWER package on tobacco control and the unique challenges and accomplishments of tobacco control in India.

The second session focussed in detail the various evidence-based clinical and public health approaches of tobacco cessation and providing practical tips for tobacco cessation.

The sessions were structured around small facilitated presentation to allow all participants to enter practical discussions. Feedback from the participants was very positive.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Organising Chairman, Dr. L. Vamsi Krishna Reddy and his team, and the management of Sardar Patel Postgraduate Institute of Medical and Dental Sciences, Lucknow for their hard work and excellent hospitality and for successfully organising the CDE programme. The programme was greatly enjoyed by all the participants and provided a chance to meet like-minded people, the opportunity to network and learn from one another, and chance to explore new ideas.
